What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is an official UK wide, government-backed certification that helps companies guard against the most common cyber threats and reduce your risk by at least 80%. It also allows you to demonstrate your commitment to cyber security to prospective customers.
Why get Certified?
You’ll need a Cyber Essentials certification if you have a local authority contract, or are part of a large supply chain such as banks or the NHS. Cyber Essentials certifications are also the first step to GDPR and can also be an effective way of reducing cyber insurance costs. Having Cyber Essentials in place ensures basic cybersecurity measures are in place, preventing approximately 80% of cyber attacks which have seen a huge increase since the COVID-19 outbreak
Cyber crime costs UK businesses £24b a year, a few examples include British Airways who received a £183m ICO fine and Marriot Hotels with a £99m ICO fine to name just a few.
Times are changing, attacks are changing. Cyber attacks are evolving constantly and traditional endpoint security is not enough.
Why Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials helps prevent the vast majority of cyber-attacks. Even a simple virus or piece of malware could result in loss of company and client data, disrupt your cash flow, and waste time. Never mind the damage to reputation a breach can cause. Loss of data could breach the Data Protection Act and lead to fines or prosecution.
Having a Cyber Essentials certification will:
– Help protect your organisation against common cyber threats
– Show your customers you take cyber security seriously
– Enable you to bid for Government contracts
Since October 2014, it has been mandatory to have a Cyber Essentials certification if you have any public sector or local authority contracts. Holding a Cyber Essentials badge enables you to bid for these contracts.
